Online Journalism Blog

March 10th, 2011 · Comments Off on Online Journalism Blog · Comm361, Student Blog Posts

Onlinejournalismblog.com made predicitions about the nature of journalism in the next 25 years.

-Oddly enough the blog predicts people will “still be prediciting the death of newspapers.

Because print media is becoming less and less profitable a popular belief is it will eventually disapear. The blog writer ” Influence and status are hard to buy. As long as newspapers offer either, there will be proprietors willing to make a loss on the balance sheet, for benefits elsewhere.”

Another interesting prediction is the comparison between journalists and musicians The blog predicits that because journalists, nowadays, do not need college degrees to write, the importance of growing a fanbase is increased. In 25 years journalists will get jobs based on the following they can build, not the education they receive.

March 10th, 2011 · Comments Off on Multimedia Project Storyboard: Mindmeister Outline · Comm361, Student Blog Posts

Just wanted to link to the Mindmeister outline our group (Raffi Paul, Lexie Ramage and myself) created for our Football Multimedia Project. Mindmeister is a pretty cool tool for mapping and brainstorming to help you get started with any type of planning that you may need to do. It’s basically like a virtual ‘spider web’, allowing you to add lines and idea bubbles for all of your information. You can even share your web with other members of your group so that you all have a chance to edit the outline, making collaboration so much easier. Check ours out here!

March 10th, 2011 · Comments Off on No suprise, 25 percent of audited companies have illegitimate backlinks · Comm361, Student Blog Posts

Summary: The San Mateo-based SEO firm BrightEdge released an audit of 1,000 companies and found that 25 percent of them back-link to sites that put them at risk of corrective actions by search engine companies.

Image provided by www.bloggingjunkie.com

In a TechCrunch article released today, results of a two-week audit by SEO firm BrightEdge show that approximately 25 percent of companies have backlinks to link-farming sites, Web sites who offer little content and serve to sell link space to companies seeking to raise their search results rank.

The results gives credence to JC Penny’s story that it and many other firms who contract SEO  companies to designed their online marketing strategy were unaware of the practice. Read the JC Penny story here.

Mindmeister allows online collaboration and brainstorming

March 10th, 2011 · Comments Off on Mindmeister allows online collaboration and brainstorming · Comm361, Student Blog Posts

In today’s globalized age, many business partners are working together on projects that cannot be completed without some sort of visual collaboration. However, constantly playing email tag and attaching documents constantly can be tedious and unsuccessful.

With these issues in mind, Mindmeister.com came up with a creative solution. By allowing users to create “mind maps” in which they visually map out ideas and charts to organize projects, this gives others involved in the project the ability to not only view the project, but also make changes, add notes and other collaborative elements. To view an example of my very own mind map, click here.

NAMI NoVA Project Description

March 10th, 2011 · Comments Off on NAMI NoVA Project Description · Comm361, Student Blog Posts

Our project’s goal is to recover NAMI Northern Virginia history and present it interactively. We will conduct interviews with past board members, do research about the institution and gather information about its history. We will be using different online platforms to organize and present the information.

Our project will be constructed around an interactive timeline. We’ll be using dipity to create it. We’re planning to use YouTube to post our videos, but they also will be linked to the timelime. We will use batchgeo to create a Google map, and point the locations and programs offered by NAMI Northern Virginia. The map will be linked to the timeline. Slideshows, scanned documents and other images will also be linked. We will use social media to disseminate the information we produce, and to reach out to NAMI Northern Virginia’s already established audience on Facebook.

I will be interviewing prior and current NAMI NoVA employees, editing the Website and assisting Ryan and/or Keon with the timeline and/or video editing (time permitting).

I have very strong interviewing and AP Style editing skills, but hope to learn more technological skills by working with Ryan and/or Keon.

So far, I have found different media consent forms for the project, and am waiting for approval from Jeanne Comeau.

My Video Conference with George Allen on C-SPAN

March 10th, 2011 · Comments Off on My Video Conference with George Allen on C-SPAN · Comm361, Facebook, Student Blog Posts

George Allen is back and on top of his game! Allen participated in a C-SPAN video conference with students from George Mason University and The University of Denver to discuss his upcoming Senate run and his new book “What Washington Can Learn from the World of Sports.”

I was one of the lucky students who had the chance to personally talk to Allen and ask him a question, “You have mentioned numerous times that Thomas Jefferson is one of your biggest role models; what similarities do you see between yourself and him?”

He mentioned that besides the distinct title of holding Thomas Jefferson’s seat in the Virginia General Assembly, he admitted he is a self-described “Common Sense Jeffersonian Conservative.”

This formidable opponent opened up about his campaigns strategies to reach out to the community.

They are using:

Like I mentioned above, Allen’s book came out in 2010! One of the chapters in his book, which is relateable in his political life, sports life, and family life is: Defense Wins Championships.

Solid conclusion.

As related to online journalism, Allen ended with “The internet is the best invention since the Guttenberg Press”. I could not have out it any better, Mr. Allen.

STAR Lab Workshop – Photoshop

March 10th, 2011 · Comments Off on STAR Lab Workshop – Photoshop · Comm361, Student Blog Posts

Photoshop has been a widely-used program in the media realm for quite awhile. However, now that nearly all images are digitally captured and edited, a concrete understanding of the program is necessary to be successful in the business today.

That being said, my experience in the STAR lab Photoshop workshop was extremely useful and informative. While I knew how to use basic tools such a cropping and resizing an image, that was about the extent of it. The workshop focused on the basics of image editing, with an emphasis on a few techniques:

  • The healing brush and clone stamp tool
  • The pen tool and path creation
  • The eyedropper tool
  • The zoom tool

By having a basic understanding of how one can edit digital images, it gives the user an advantage in the new media age. Additionally, by having a complete understanding of how images can be altered, it makes one consider the validity of images and the ethics involved with changing images for publication.
